About Sebastian
Sebastian's journey into the world of finance began in the heart of Warsaw, where he embarked on a path that would ultimately redefine the industry. Armed with a determination to excel and a thirst for knowledge, he set forth to acquire his master's degree from the esteemed University of Warsaw, a solid foundation upon which his career would flourish.
But the lure of greater challenges and opportunities led him to the bustling metropolis of London. It was here, as a quantitative analyst, that he took his first steps into the dynamic world of numbers, algorithms, and risk assessment. London's financial epicentre served as the perfect crucible for his budding career, where he honed his analytical skills and developed a keen understanding of the intricacies of financial markets.
However, Sebastian's journey was far from linear. Over the course of 15 years, his career took him on an exhilarating odyssey through various facets of the financial landscape. He navigated the diverse terrains of tier 1 banks, including the prestigious HSBC and Barclays, where he honed his craft in the crucible of high-stakes finance.
But his voyage didn't stop there. Sebastian's insatiable curiosity led him into the world of advisory, where he became a trusted consultant at Accenture, a global advisory firm. Here, he found himself at the intersection of strategic decision-making and financial expertise, contributing his insights to shape the financial strategies of institutions around the world.
Innovation beckoned, and he answered the call by joining Palantir Technologies, a trailblazing technology company nestled in the heart of San Francisco. In this hallowed ground of tech innovation, he harnessed the power of data and technology to transform financial decision-making. Sebastian became a modern-day alchemist, turning data into gold and crafting models that held the keys to smarter investments.
Throughout this extraordinary journey, Sebastian's expertise flourished. He became a maestro in developing and validating models across a multitude of asset classes, ranging from wholesale and commercial to retail, investment funds, specialised lending, asset finance, and leasing. His abilities extended beyond model development; he emerged as a leader in Model Risk Management.
Sebastian's influence extended beyond the confines of his daily work. He authored several Model Risk Governance standards and conducted meticulous audits of model and credit risk frameworks, setting the bar for industry best practices. His passion for Model Risk Management was palpable, and he eagerly shared his expertise and groundbreaking ideas at conferences across Europe.
In 2022, at the prestigious RiskMinds conference, he unveiled a game-changing Model Risk Quantification methodology. This innovative approach allowed for the pricing of Model Risk itself, a revolutionary concept that promised to reshape the landscape of risk management.
But amidst his achievements lay a profound concern. Sebastian had witnessed the catastrophic failures of models during the 2009 financial crisis and the disruptive impact of the 2019 Covid crisis. These crises had exposed a glaring industry-wide issue - the inability to identify and mitigate Model Risk in a timely manner.
As time progressed, Financial Institutions found themselves increasingly exposed to model risk. The complexity of models grew exponentially, and new risks emerged, fuelled by the relentless march of artificial intelligence. Model Risk Management ceased to be a mere regulatory requirement; it became a strategic imperative, crucial not only for compliance but also for safeguarding customers and ensuring the systemic integrity of the Financial Services industry.
It was with this conviction that Sebastian embarked on a new chapter in his journey. He founded Salinon, a beacon of hope in the financial world. Salinon wasn't just a company; it was a mission, a commitment to help Financial Institutions meet the stringent expectations set by regulators, efficiently manage their model risk, and prepare for the challenges posed by the ever-evolving landscape of Artificial Intelligence.
Sebastian's journey, marked by passion, innovation, and unwavering dedication, had led him to a resounding realisation: models couldn't afford to fail. In the face of increasing complexity and the emergence of new risks, the financial industry needed a trusted partner, a guardian of stability, and a catalyst for innovation. Salinon was born to meet that need, to ensure that models didn't fail, and to play a pivotal role in shaping the future of the financial world.
